Gabrielle Chanel asked Ernest Beaux in 1921 to create a "perfume for a woman who smells of woman", rare and powerful. The creator proposed a visionary composition with a unique use of aldehydes. Mademoiselle Chanel chose the 5th fragrance variation presented to her and decided to keep the number as the name of the fragrance. For the new perfume, she chose a bottle with a radical design, embellished with a white decal and a faceted cap. In 1986, Jacques Polge, CHANEL's perfume creator since 1978, reinterpreted his predecessor's olfactory composition of N°5 in a fuller version as an eau de parfum.
