Very few private consumers need an access point. Generally speaking you may say that a private wireless router consists of a wired router that supplies the network connection, an access point that transmits the signal, a switch that allows the use of LAN cables with other devices and a physically built-in firewall.
If you have a professional solution, the different components of the private router will be divided into separate products. This ensures a higher uptime and more flexibility. Often you would have an access point in all the rooms where you want strong, wireless Wi-Fi connection besides the wired connection.
If you as a private consumer have a router with poor antennas, you can achieve a better connection with an access point. An access point sends the signal from your router through its built-in antennas, which are often of high quality.
